MERRY CHRISTMAS

I'd like to give a sweet shout out to Santa who not only visited preschool, but helped clean up after the party! Thanks Santa! We love you! I'd also like to report that Santa told me ALL of our preschoolers are on his Nice List this year! Yay!

I hope you enjoy some time off from all the busy-ness of life and take in the sweetness that this special season brings! Merry Christmas to all of you.

BOOK EXCHANGE

We are still collecting books for our book exchange. Please donate a gently used or new (under $5) gender-neutral book. If you can wrap it that would be extra awesome! Santa will give each child a book when they visit with him next week at our party. We would like the books by this Friday. Thanks!

SUPER SATURDAY

Just a quick reminder that Super Saturday is tomorrow from 10:00 - 2:00. Children need to bring a lunch. Snow clothes aren't needed, but coats and gloves would be great so we can spend some time outside. We will be making some fun holiday crafts, treats, singing songs, and reading stories.

Also on our "to -do" list is watching the film The Snowman. This is a beautiful interpretation of the classic children's book with the same title. It won "Best Short Film" a few years back (1982 I think). Take some time this season to view it. You can check out both the film and the book at the library.

HO HO HO! Miss Kari

READY, SET......DECEMBER!!

We can't WAIT to get started on our December preschool activities! There is a lot going on this month - please watch for the calendar to come home.

We are planning our Saturday with the children for December 10th. This is a day for you to drop off your child at the preschool while you go and get some Christmas shopping done! We will host them from 10am - 2:00pm. They should bring a lunch. We will provide a snack and some fun holiday crafts, as well as play some games. Please also pack snow clothes for them. We are planning some outside time if the weather cooperates!

Our Christmas parties this year will be held on the last day of class before the Christmas break, in the individual classes. Santa will be there! Our classes are definitely on his "nice list" this year! Santa will help us with our book exchange. I will send info about the book exchange and the party details home with your child.

Scholastic book orders are available to order online. The fliers will go home with the calendar at the beginning of December. They are open to order through December 7th. Let me know if they will be gifts and I will sneak them to you. A HUGE THANK YOU for all your orders! We have already received over $100 in free books, puzzles, and games for our classroom since September! AWESOME!!!

"Jingle bells, jingle bells...." Miss Kari

GIVING THANKS

I love to hear the children comment on the things they're thankful for. Of course at the top of the list is "mom", "dad", and an occasional sibling. However, Santa made the thankful list this year as well. Love that!

Our Thanksgiving luncheon is Tuesday, the 22nd. We will begin at 11:30. We are having it at the Park Street LDS Church. You can reach Park St from either S. 5th West or from Pioneer Road.

I'm so thankful for all of your children and the light they each bring to the classroom. Thanks to you all for all you do for them and for sharing them with me! Miss Kari

NOVEMBER BEAUTY

Halloween was fabulous! TONS of fun!! Thank you to all of you for the great costumes and yummy treats!

We have been spending a lot of time outside - still!! The weather has been great and we've seen first hand how the world around us changes. The colors of fall are gorgeous! Thank you mother nature!!

This month we are learning about how animals prepare for winter. We've had some very educational lessons about squirrels and turtles and even the teachers are learning a lot! The week before Thanksgiving is our Thankful Week. What a special time of year for the children to share their feelings about the things and people in their lives that they love! This is one of my favorite weeks at school!!

Calendar items: Nov 22nd is our 7th annual Thanksgiving luncheon! Plan for 11:30 at the Park Street LDS church. The children will be performing a poem and a few of our favorite songs. Don't forget your camera! Scholastic book orders are due on Nov 10th. You can order online at www.scholastic.com/bookclubs. Our class code is GQRPN. Thanks!

PRESCHOOL UPDATES

What have we been up to? FALL FUN! Our apple orchard field trip was HEAVY! The trees are 43 LBS lighter! Yes, we picked 43 LBS of apples! And I hope you're all enjoying them. We ate more of them for snack today. They are yummy dipped in peanut butter, caramel, or chocolate. Or even just alone - nature's perfect food.

We are in leaf mode right now. We touched squash plant leaves, apple tree leaves, maple tree leaves, birch tree leaves.... we watched a demonstration of how plants "suck up" water. Today we played at Smith Park and collected leaves, pine cones, and rocks and created lovely sculptures with our nature finds.

Next week is Halloween pandemonium! One of my favorite book making projects is next week. Also, watch for a sign up to help with treats for our party. BOO!!

EARTH SCIENCE

"This Pretty Planet" by Tom Chapin is our song for our new unit on the earth. We have learned about the 4 layers of the earth (crust, mantle, outer core, inner core) and about volcanoes. The children participated in a science project today - molten hot magma! We created a small scale volcanic eruption in class today by combining vinegar and baking soda. We colored the vinegar red with food coloring for a more realistic effect. We also crafted a volcanic cone with paper lava coming out. So fun! And thanks to Bill Nye the Science Guy we watched some footage of real volcanoes exploding.

Next to come: where do we fit in the solar system? Space and planets!!

Teaching children to love science at an early age provides them with a desire in the later school years to tackle those tough classes that come along. Instill a love of learning early and the world is theirs to claim.

What have we done over the last couple of days? We've learned everyone's name, talked about our favorite food, learned calendar and weather songs, played on the playground, read The Kissing Hand and made our own kissing hand to give to our moms and dads, explored centers, and learned a good bye song. Whew! More to come next week!

SCHOOL DAYS, SCHOOL DAYS

We're almost there... back to (pre)school! First of all I want to thank all of my parents, past and present, for making recommendations to other parents about us! I have been getting lots of calls lately and so many have told me that they were referred by a friend. That is the best compliment ever! THANK YOU!!!

I've been spending time over at the preschool this week getting things ready. I love our classroom and the chance we get to be at Adams Elementary. All of our rent $$ goes right to the school and right to the teachers to help cover costs. It make me happy to know that KRK Preschool can help out and still be so blessed! Thank you Steve Gentile (the principal) and all the teachers for giving us this opportunity!

The weather looks like it will be pretty warm when school starts so shorts and sandals are fine. The classroom also has air conditioning. But as always, dress for the mess:)

See you at open house!

I was over at the preschool today cleaning and setting up. I'm getting REALLY excited! We have some fun things planned for the beginning of the school year including a field trip to the BYU-I planetarium. Also, the teachers and I are making a giant caterpillar to hang from the ceiling. I just thought our classroom wasn't quite complete without one!

See you next week!

I have been school shopping for my kids and have found fantastic deals at crazy8.com (owned by Gymboree) and landsend.com. I would love to know what some of your favorite shopping spots are!

Enjoy the last little bit of summer and send Mother Nature a message that we want this warm weather to stay for a few more months (minus the thunder storms). See you at open house!

SUMMER UPDATE

Hello all, I hope your summer has been spectacular so far! It's nice to have a break, but I'm always thinking of preschool... I was going over class lists last night and I am so excited to see some familiar faces and meet some new friends as well. Our open house is planned for Tuesday and Wednesday, the 30th and 31st of August. Watch for your postcard to come in the mail!

I am still registering preschoolers for my MWF and T TH classes. They both meet from 12:00 - 2:00. The MWF class is $75/month and the T TH class is $55/month. There is a $25 registration fee.

We went to Yellowstone on the 4th of July and there were still some baby animals walking around! If you get a chance, take a family field trip! It's only 80 miles north of here! My kids have two favorite hikes - Mystic Falls and Fairy Falls. Enjoy our Idaho beauty with your little ones!

See you in September!

Reading Out Loud to Your Kids

Reading out loud with your children will provide many great benefits to both you and your child. By reading out loud, parents are able to introduce appropriate content to their children at a higher reading level. This gives the parent and child an opportunity to talk about many important events, questions, cultures, opinions, beliefs, and much more. This creates a special time where parents and children can bond and grow closer, forming trusting relationship centered on teaching opportunities.

Also, reading out loud to children is one of the best ways to help them grow in language development and grow a true love for reading. Reading out loud starts with your infant and should continue on to their teenage years. Studies prove that students who have been read out loud to do better in school. Right now among fourth-graders, only 54% read something for pleasure everyday. Among eighth-graders only 30% read for pleasure each day and by twelfth grade, only 19% read for pleasure (Jim Trelease). Trelease also offers a helpful and simple, two part formula for reading:

1. The more you read, the better you get at it; the better you get at it, the more you like it; and the more you like it, the more you do it.
2. The more you read, the more you know; and the more you know, the smarter you grow.

Reading out loud to your children will truly be a positive and beneficial experience for you and for your children. Nothing can replace this. I encourage everyone to add reading out loud to their list of summer activities this year and watch the many changes that will happen because of your effort.

Condensed list of great read aloud books recommended by Jim Trelease:

1. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day By Judith Viorst
2. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs By Judi Barrett
3. The Foot Book By Dr. Seuss
4. Heckedy Peg By Audrey Wood
5. Ira Sleeps Over By Bernard Waber
6. Snip Snap! What’s That? By Mara Bergman
7. The Story of Ruby Bridges By Robert Coles
8. The True Story of the Three Little Pigs By John Scieszka
9. Dinosaurs Before Dark By Mary Pope Osborne (Magic Tree House series)
10. The Hundred Dress By Eleanor Estes

Miss Julie

Hello Parents!

My name is Julie and I am a new intern for Kari at the preschool. It has been an exciting few weeks as I have been able to work with your children. We have had so much fun learning together and I look forward to being with them until the end of the school year.

This is my last semester at BYU-Idaho and I will be graduating with my degree in Child Development this July. I am excited to finally be done but will miss the college, teachers, and Rexburg. At the end of July, my husband and I will be moving to Provo, Utah where he will finish up school. We are also expecting our first baby on June 14th! There are so many changes coming up for us this summer but we look forward to these new challenges. I hope to one day start a preschool of my own (where ever we end up!) and help children just like yours grow and develop. Working here at Kinder-Ready Kids is a great experience to get me to that goal.

Importance of Father Involvement

The father’s role in a child’s life is often looked over as not important or insignificant. There have been several studies however that proves this thought wrong, father’s involvement is extremely important and beneficial to the success of a child. John Gottman, Ph. D. talks about the important role that fathers play in the life of their child in his book Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child. He specifically talks about the benefits of father involvement to girls and boys. The benefits towards girls are; they are more likely to have academic success, have positive relationships with males in the future, and less sexual promiscuity at a young age. While for boys they give them balance between assertiveness and self restraint, abilities to delay gratification, and self control. These are just a few of the things that Gottman says about father’s positive influence on the life of a child.

Now to take a different non-secular side to the role of the father for a minute, in the October 1987 LDS conference President Ezra Taft Benson spoke on fathers in his article called, To the Fathers in Israel. He states that the role of a father is an eternal calling from which one is never released. He goes on to talk about that as fathers in Israel, they have a great responsibility to provided for the material needs of their family and to have the necessary supplies saved in case of emergency. If all fathers were to take this role seriously and provide for their families we would have a lot less pain in the home. President Benson ends his talk by suggesting ten specific ways that fathers can be there for their families. I would like to just mention one of those it says, “Go on daddy daughter dates and father and sons outings with your children. As a family, go on campouts and picnics, to ball games and recitals, to school programs, and so forth. Having Dad there makes all the difference.” How profound that last statement is, having Dad there makes all the difference. If fathers will just be there for their children not just in the physical sense but in the emotional sense as well the whole family will benefit from positive interactions. In his closing remarks he says “…that fathers can do so much for the salvation and exaltation of their families” now we just need to help fathers realize their importance.

To move back to a secular source on the Involvement of Fathers, authors say, “The more that fathers are involved with their children, the more satisfied they are with their lives, the closer their ties with their communities, and the more connected they are with their families.” From this source we learn that fathers’ involvement not only benefits the child but the family and community. The amount of involvement a father has with his child depends on many factors. We learn from this text again, that fathers who begin to become emotionally involved with the child from the time that the partner becomes pregnant benefits the father and child for a life time. When bonds are formed from the very beginning there is a connection that will always be there between father and child.

APRIL NEWS

April is here and so is the wind. Please continue to bring sweaters/hoodies/coats for your children. We are going outside as often as we can, but it's still a little chilly. But chilly or not, we LOVE spending time outside! It feels good to shed our winter coat and run run run!

Spring Break is April 7th and 8th. Enjoy your days off! I am also taking a spring break this year... I will be spending some time in France, celebrating my 20th wedding anniversary! We leave the afternoon of the 5th and I will be back on the 14th. My trusty and stall ward interns will be taking care of things while I'm gone, as well as a previous intern, Miss Skyla, who is coming back to help. Some of you may remember her!

The children have been learning about spring insects, animals, and planting. Whether or not Rexburg realizes it, spring has sprung in our classroom! On Earth Day, April 22nd, we will be taking a field trip to the Nature Park. We are also planning a field trip to the Idaho Falls Zoo in May. Watch for info to come home!

Au revior! Miss Kari

LUCK O' THE IRISH

I'm seeing green!! What a fun Leprechaun week we've had. Those pesky elves left a mess in our classroom, complete with their famous gold coins and dust! We collected the dust (lime Jell-O powder) and sprinkled it on our green apples, which of course made US lucky!! Are the teachers having more fun than the kids????

Scholastic book orders are due. I will keep them open until Monday, the 21st. Our class code is GQRPN. All the catalogs are online. Thanks!

Welcome spring! We will be starting a new unit based on the season and the world around us.

Looking forward: Spring Break is April 7th & 8th. Enjoy a nice long weekend with your family!

The children can wear their pj's, bring a pillow, and a favorite book. We will be having green eggs and ham for snack! We have a field trip planned for Friday to the Madison Public Library (no formal class that day - the district is out for teacher inservice). In preparation for this, we have been learning about how reading stories can help us learn to make choices and we acted out The 3 Little Pigs in class - it was the cutest thing you've ever seen! We also wrote a story as a class. As always, read to your child!! It's one of the best things you can do!

Info will come home soon about the fieldtrip.

All About Etiquette

We are ready to show you our stuff - we think!! We have been practicing our best manners and will show them off to you on Wednesday night, the 23rd, at 5:30pm. The dinner has been moved to the Park Street LDS Church - same location as our Christmas party. If you haven't had a chance to sign up for a potluck item, please do so! The sign up will be with the daily sign in sheet.

Learning about our country and our presidents has been rewarding - I have to say that I really felt the spirit of our country as we talked with the children and answered their questions. How blessed we are to have the freedoms we do!

March is on it's way... hopefully with some warmer weather. We will go outside as often as we can.

Mary Morse

Hi I'm Mary Morse. Just a little information about me; I was born in North Carolina and lived there until I was ten years old. I moved from an average sized town to Los Angeles County....It was a big change in life for me. I originally came to BYU-Idaho thinking that I would major in Interior Design but something didn't seem right about it. I then contemplated several majors and decided Child Development was the one for me. I love this major. I find the growth of children interesting; how something so small as a baby grows and develops into an adult is fascinating to me. I love to travel and study other cultures. My minor is Humanities because I learn so much culture from it that I hope I can institute it in the classroom and at my home one day. I've traveled to France, Spain, and China and each visit has taught me a lot. I've grown more appreciated and intrigued by other cultures and in some ways have become more appreciative of the United States.

Friday, January 28, 2011

Hello! I'm Hannah Harris. I'm from Lyman, Wyoming. Born and Raised! I have loved working with my major to understand children, having fun with them and each individual personality.
I work with children because I really do love the things that they come up with. They see the world in so many different views that I love to hear them. I like to help them and let them find accomplishments for the tasks that they do. I would love to be a Child Life Specialist and maybe work with a Hospital helping children understand their procedures and their illnesses. I'm really enjoying working with the Kinder Ready Kids this semester.

Tammy Harvey

Hi my name is Tammy Harvey and I am an intern for kinder ready kids this semester! I am really enjoying getting to know all the kids and helping them learn and grow. A little about me... I am from Ellensburg Washington, and I am the youngest child of 10. I have 3 brothers and 6 sisters with 30 nieces and nephews (1 more on the way next month). My husband and I were married last august and will be here for a few years while he finishes his degree in exercise science. I graduated last semester with a BS degree in Child Development. I absolutely loved my major and plan to use my knowledge to raise my own family in the future.

Hi, my name is Ariel Stoddard. I am one of the new interns at Kinder Ready Kids this semester. I am from Star Valley, Wyoming. I just got married in December and am living here in Rexburg while my husband and I finish up school. Last semester at BYU-I was I able to work in the preschool labs on campus. It was so much fun. I loved it and I hope that I can implement some of the things I learned there at Kinder Ready Kids. I'm really excited to work with the children this semester! I know we're going to have lots of fun learning new things!

NEW INTERN

Hi, my name is Melissa Carlisle. I am one of the new interns this semester. I am really looking forward to helping with Kinder-Ready Kids Preschool. Just a little about myself...
I am from Alpine, UT. I served an LDS mission in Rochester, New York. I sure miss that beautiful place! I have really enjoyed majoring in child development. It is fascinating to me to learn about all the processes that take place as a child develops, and how we as teachers, parents, and communities can play a big role in that process. I would love to obtain a Masters degree in dance therapy and work with children who have special needs. Kids are GREAT!

WELCOME BACK TO PRESCHOOL

Brrr, we started back to school on such a cold day! However,we still managed to have lots of fun while meeting our new teachers. Visit the blog again soon to read bio's about our new interns.

We are learning about the changes in the season, why seasons change, and our world around us during the season of winter. It's a fun unit! Yesterday, the children made pictures of the Northern Lights with chalk pastels and cotton on construction paper. They turned out so pretty! Hopefully they showed them to you... :)

The morning class is working on letters M, N, O, and P this month. Today we made monkeys, worked on perfecting our skill at writing the letter M, and practiced name writing. It's coming along nicely! Our current focus in name writing is to write all our letters the same size. Practice at home too!

Healthy snacks are on the menu this month, including lots of oranges and other fresh fruits, muffins, homemade breads, and crackers. As always, let me know if there is an allergy I need to be aware of. Thanks!

Stay warm!! Miss Kari
